Paul Wraith

Paul Wraith is the man who led the design team on the Daewoo interior concepts. Here we take a look at Paul's work over the years and talk to him about the way he believes automotive design will develop in the future.

After training in general Art and Design at the Cheshire School of Art Paul gained a place at Coventry University in 1990 to study Transportation Design. For his industry placement as part of the Coventry MDes, Paul went to the P.S.A. (Peugeot/Citroen) Advanced Design Centre outside Paris. In 1994 Paul graduated and won the IBCAM/British Steel Student Automotive Designer Award for his final year project - 'Maelstrom'.

From Coventry, Paul went on to the RCA to study the Masters in Vehicle Design and graduated in 1996 after a time spent at the Ford Medium Vehicle facility, Dunton, Essex. During these two years, Paul centred his attentions on interior design and won the IBCAM/British Steel Student Automotive Design Award for a second time, for his final project - 'Oddessey'.

In 1996 Paul began work for the Hyundai Europe Design office in Frankfurt and was the sole designer of the well received 1997 Hyundai EURO-1 Geneva Show car interior. With this, Paul further developed the ideas and concepts he had initialised during his time at the RCA with the Oddessey project; particularly the 'twist-grip' steering wheel rim mounted gear changer.

Whilst the RCA project was a proposal only, the EURO-1 was a fully running and powerful racing car. The twist-grip controls being an efficient alternative to the conventional paddle and button shifters seen now in a number of road and racing cars. The EURO-1 technical work was completed by Anthony Dodworth, an ex-formula 1 and McLaren engineer of repute, the exterior by David Cutcliff.

After this spell in Germany Paul returned to the UK and to the energetic Daewoo Worthing studio under the then Head of Design, Ginger Ostle. In his first year there, Paul contributed significantly to the Daewoo Mirae in concept and execution of the interior as team leader. In this project Paul continued his investigation into driver systems, proposing in this case the use of drive-by-wire and advanced seating systems. Unlike EURO-1 which was a pure sports car, this was a complex hybrid. The fusion of family car and supercar, the VSC (Versatile Sports Car).

A year later Paul further developed the Mirae concepts and systems in the Daewoo Musiro, launched at the 2000 Birmingham Motor Show. The Musiro followed on from the Mirae but took the ideas and concepts closer to production reality. The Musiro was based on an existing platform and was designed to utilise current production technologies. As Wraith puts it: "I believe I managed to achieve 90% of the versatility of the Mirae in a more realisable proposal that, if wished for, could be taken to production in a little over a year. The V.S.C. concept has value, as witnessed by the number of hybrid or cross-over concepts at recent shows."

Certain ideas and characteristics can be seen to be carried from the Paul's work at Coventry and the RCA through to the motor show concepts: "It shows that these young ideas have value and this should be of interest to others wanting to work in this industry". Wraith's outlook on the future of design in the context of changing World markets is positive. "The process of car design and development is changing. Use of digital working mediums is opening up design and allowing it a more global base - in the future a 'virtual' studio should be able to function more efficiently than today, the designers and engineers, located around the world bringing with them the daily experiences of living in diverse cultures in a pure and unaffected way; whilst their global location diversity could allow 24 hour operation. As yet the technology inhibits this practically, but more importantly nobody has done it yet, the precedent that others might follow isn't there.

"The inclusion of issues and disciplines from outside the automotive sector, often motivated by the rapid changes in society, technology, and behaviour, are making this a richer and more diverse environment in which to meaningfully extend creativity. More and more the automotive designer must be aware of trends in all the creative an emergent arenas as the automobile is a fusion of so many disparate technological, physiological, and emotional issues. In the past it may have been acceptable to have just a passion for the car, now the designer must have equal enthusiasm for product, furniture, and web design. Understand media, culture, be well traveled, predict or be aware of trends, but most of all be motivated.

"The future of automotive design is challenging. So much work has already been done, but it is clear that so much more is yet to come. The future is bright."

Paul Wraith is now working for Ford Design in Koln, Germany
